The Rusolyte Solutions : A wide group of multiple electrolytes solutions – some designed for daily water & electrolyte maintenance & others for replacement of losses.

Extracellular Replacement Solution with 5% Dextrose
- Essentially same composition as plasma except with double concentration of potassium & bicarbonate precursors.
- Provides calcium, potassium magnesium & bicarbonate precursors.
- Well suited for replacement of intravascular, intestinal & transcellular losses caused by diarrhoea, loss of plasma etc.
Indications:
- Mild Diarrhoea.
- Diabetic acidosis.
- Hyponatremia.
- Metabolic acidosis.
- Replacement or maintenance of extracellular fluid volume pre or post – operatively.
Dose: To be based on the loss being replaced. About 1-2 litres in 24 hours is usual adult dose.

Gastric Replacement Solution with 5% Dextrose
- Replaces usual electrolytes lost via gastric suction or vomiting.
- Ammonium ions in Rusolyte G are converted to urea & hydrogen by liver & thereby replace lost hydrogen ions.
- Helps to correct moderate alkalosis & provides calories too.
Indications:
- Loss of gastric juice through gastric suction or vomiting.
- Correction of metabolic alkalosis due to excessive sodium bicarbonate or excessive diuretic therapy.
Dose: Estimated loss due to gastric suction or vomiting is made good by replacement on a volume for volume basis. About 500 ml to 2 litres in 24 hours is the usual adult dose.

Maintenance Solution with 5% Dextrose
- Richest source of Potassium – very useful to treat hypokalemia.
- Corrects acidosis & supplies energy.
- Fulfils the need of body-electrolytes, pH maintenance, calorie-supply & water-replacement; hence ideal fluid for maintenance fluid therapy.
Indications:
- Ideal maintenance fluid for parenteral fluid therapy.
- To correct hypokalemia – consequent to diarrhoea, bilious vomiting or ulcerative colitis.
Dose: Is fixed taking body-weight or body-surface-area into consideration. About 1300 ml per square meter during 24 hours is average usual dose. The dose can safely be increased to 2500 to 3000 ml. per square meter to cover abnormal losses.

Paediatric Maintenance Solution with 5% Dextrose
- Ideally suited for fluid – maintenance of children.
- Provides electrolytes, maintains pH, supplies calories 7 makes up water deficit.
Indications:
- Maintenance fluid in infants & children to provide daily water & electrolyte – needs.
- Excessive water-loss.
- Inability to concentrate urine (diabetes insipidus).
- Mild metabolic acidosis.
Dose: About 1300 to 2500 ml per square meter of body- surface-area per 24 hours is usual dose.
